Between the Colosseum and the church of San Pietro in Vincoli, this family-run trattoria features a tempting antipasto table and fresh pastas. The specialty is fettuccine al Nerone (with peas, salami, and mushrooms), but the homemade ravioli are good, too. In fair weather you eat outdoors with a view of the Colosseum.

This old-fashioned beer hall is very busy at lunchtime, when it's invaded by businesspeople and students from the Piazza Venezia area. There's a good selection of salads and cold cuts, as well as pasta and daily specials. Bavarian-style specialties such as goulash and wurst and sauerkraut prevail in the evening, when light and dark Italian beers flow freely. Reservations not accepted.
