Jewish Ghetto and Tiber Island
Piperno
Address: Monte dei Cenci 9
Price: 70,000-120,000 lire - CURRENCY CONVERTER
Credit cards accepted: AE, DC, MC, V.
Phone: 06-654-2772
A favorite, in the old Jewish ghetto next to historic Palazzo Cenci,
Piperno has been in business for more than a century. It is the place
to go for Rome's extraordinary carciofi alla giudia. You eat in three
small wood-paneled dining rooms or at one of a handful of tables outdoors.
Try filetti di baccalà (fillet of cod), pasta e ceci (a thick soup of
pasta tubes and chickpeas), fiori di zucca (stuffed zucchini flowers),
and artichokes.
Sora
Lella
Address:
Via Ponte Quattro Capi 16
Price: 40,000-70,000 lire - CURRENCY CONVERTER
Credit cards accepted: AE, MC, V.
Phone: 06-686-1601
What was once a simple trattoria ensconced on the Tiberina Island is
now a monument to the late foundress herself, beloved example of true
Roman warmth and personality. And although prices are much higher than
when Sora Lella presided over the cash desk, the cooking is still 100%
Roman. Rigatoni all'amatriciana and seppie con piselli (cuttlefish stewed
with tomatoes and peas) are usually on the menu, but leave room for
the quintessential Roman ricotta cake.
