Trastevere

Corsetti-Il Galeone
Address: Piazza San Cosimato 27
Price: 70,000-120,000 lire - CURRENCY CONVERTER
Credit cards accepted: AE, DC, MC, V.

Located on a market square in Trastevere, this spot is decorated like an old galleon, lined with well-seasoned wood and laded with nautical accessories. Seafood is the specialty, but you will also find an ample selection of typical Roman pastas and meat dishes, as well as the famous carciofi alla romana.

Da Checcho er Carrettiere
Address: Via Benedetta 10
Price: 70,000-120,000 lire - CURRENCY CONVERTER
Credit cards accepted: AE, DC, MC, V.
Phone: 06-581-7018
You'll find Da Checcho tucked away behind Piazza Trilussa in Trastevere. It has the look of a country inn, with hanging braids of garlic and an antipasto table that features some unusual specialties, such as a well-seasoned mashed potato-and-tomato mixture. Among the hearty pasta offerings are spaghetti alla carrettiera (with black pepper, sharp cheese, and olive oil) and linguine with scampi. Seafood (which can be expensive) is the main feature on the menu, but traditional Roman meat dishes are offered, too. This is a great place to soak up genuine Trastevere color and hospitality. Reservations essential.

Paris
Address: Piazza San Callisto 7/a
Price: 40,000-70,000 lire - CURRENCY CONVERTER
Credit cards accepted: AE, DC, MC, V.
Phone: 06-581-5378
On a small square just off Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere, Paris (named after a former owner, not the city) has a reassuring, understated ambience, without the hokey, folky flamboyance of so many eating places in this gentrified neighborhood. It also has a menu featuring the best of classic Roman cuisine: homemade fettuccine, delicate fritto misto and, of course, baccalà. In fair weather opt for tables on the little piazza.

Romolo
Address: Via di Porta Settimiana 8
Price: 40,000-70,000 lire - CURRENCY CONVERTER
Credit cards accepted: AE, DC, V.
Phone: 06-581-8284
Nowhere else do the lingering rays of the setting Roman sun seem more inviting than from the tavern garden of this charming Trastevere haunt--reputedly the onetime home of Raphael's lady love, the Fornarina. Generations of Romans and tourists have enjoyed its romantic courtyard and historic dining room, where, in the evening, strolling musicians serenade diners. The cuisine is appropriately Roman; specialties include mozzarella alla fornarina (deep-fried, with ham and anchovies) and braciolette |d'abbacchio scottadito (grilled baby lamb chops). Alternatively, try one of the new vegetarian pastas featuring carciofi or radicchio. Meats are charcoal-grilled; there's also a wood-burning oven.
